SACRAMENTO, Calif. (TCD) — A 10-year-old boy and his father were arrested last week after the son allegedly shot and killed another boy his age using a stolen gun.
According to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office, on Saturday, Dec. 30, at 4:30 p.m., deputies were called to the 4700 block of Greenholme Drive regarding a shooting and found an unresponsive boy bleeding from his head and neck. Deputies administered first aid until medics arrived and transported the boy to a local hospital, where he died. Officials were initially told the victim was most likely 13 or 14 years old, but then they learned he was actually 10.
Witnesses reportedly told deputies the suspect or suspects went inside an apartment, so officials went to the residence and detained 53-year-old Arkete Davis and two juveniles.
The sheriff’s office said investigators learned the 10-year-old suspect went to his father’s car to get cigarettes for him and saw the gun inside. The boy allegedly “bragged that his father had a gun,” shot the 10-year-old victim once, and fled into his apartment. Detectives reportedly located the firearm in a trash can nearby and alleged Davis tried to get rid of it. The gun was stolen in 2017.
Davis, the suspect’s father, was reportedly not allowed to own a gun.
The 10-year-old suspect was arrested on a murder charge and booked into the Sacramento County Youth Detention Facility, while Davis was taken to county jail on firearm-related charges, child endangerment, and accessory after the fact.
KCRA-TV identified the victim as Keith “KJ” Frierson. He and the suspect were allegedly playing outside on their bikes when the shooting occurred. Frierson’s mother told KCRA the suspect lost a bike race and then shot her son.
According to KTXL-TV, Frierson’s mother said, “My baby took some groceries in the house, asked me if can he go outside to ride his bike. Not even 15 minutes later, my baby was gone.”
She added, “This happened for nothing. For nothing. Hold your babies. Hold them. We can’t even let our kids go ride bikes.”
Davis is due back in court Wednesday, Jan. 3.
