Police in Nebraska on Thursday arrested a 46-year-old woman on child abuse charges, more than two weeks after she brought a 12-year-old boy to the hospital weighing only 47 pounds and with a core body temperature of 80 degrees.
The average 12 year old boy weighs about 90 pounds.
KOLN reported that the boy was airlifted to Children’s Hospital in Omaha after he was brought to a hospital in Lincoln on January 12. Doctors in Omaha determined he was in septic shock and had pneumonia.
Other symptoms led investigators to believe he had been neglected, starved, and tortured for months, Lincoln Police said.
Angela Lowe has been charged with assault and false imprisonment along with child abuse.
A nurse said the boy was too weak to even lift himself up when he was brought into the hospital, and doctors did not expect him to live. As of Thursday, however, he was in critical but stable condition.
Police did not explain the connection between Lowe and boy but said she is no longer his legal guardian. He is now in state custody, and Lowe is barred from contacting him.
