It was a fight between brothers who loved each other, according to the friend who drove Tracy Marshawn Davis, 25, to a local fire station as he grasped to life after allegedly being shot and killed by his 15-year-old brother for asking him to clean his room.
Davis, a father of a young son and a veteran of the U.S. Army, died on Sunday, according to the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office in Benson, North Carolina.
Davis’ friend and roommate K.J. Brown told local CBS affiliate WNCN on Monday that he and Davis had recently moved in with Davis’ father. The 15-year-old boy also lived at the residence. Brown described things as normal in the home; the brothers would argue as brothers tend to do.
“It just happened too fast, you know?” Brown said, reflecting on the tragedy. “I don’t know what it was, man.”
Brown said they spent the day at the gym and then when they came home to prepare dinner, Davis and his brother reportedly started to argue sometime around 6 p.m. Then the elder brother told his sibling to clean his room.
A “tussle” broke out, Brown said.
“And the next thing you know, you hear gunshots,” he recalled.
Davis then “came running” to Brown, he said, telling him what happened.
“‘He just shot me,’” Davis allegedly said.
Brown helped the Army veteran into his car and they drove to a nearby fire station where emergency services were rendered briefly before EMS whisked away Davis to a local hospital.
He did not survive his injuries.
For now, police have not released the name of the 15-year-old but according to local CBS affiliate WNCN, a petition for murder in juvenile court was filed after police arrested the minor Sunday night.
It was reported that Davis’ father told police when they questioned him that it was his 15-year-old son who fired the weapon at his other child.
