Two people are behind bars in Georgia, awaiting extradition to North Carolina where they are charged in connection with a murder.
The family of 33-year-old Jonathan Charles Shores reported him missing on November 11, but his body wasn’t found until November 20, after Jose Guadalupe Lopez, 26, and his girlfriend, 31-year-old Brennan Summer Alexander, were arrested in Georgia, according to the Davidson County, North Carolina, Sheriff’s Office.
Georgia authorities didn’t know about Shores when they stopped Lopez, driving Shores’ vehicle, on November 10 in Richmond County and arrested him for possession of a firearm by a felon. Authorities released the vehicle to Alexander, who took off and was arrested the next day in neighboring Columbia County for a hit and run.
That’s when Georgia authorities learned of the missing person case in North Carolina and seized the vehicle, noting a possible bullet hole and “biological evidence” inside.
Detectives from Davidson County came to Georgia to continue their investigation and brought Shores’ vehicle back to North Carolina for further processing. Almost immediately, Lopez was charged in North Carolina with robbery with a dangerous weapon and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill. Alexander was charged with being an accessory after the fact to those counts.
In the course of the investigation, detectives determined that Lopez shot Shores on November 9, and he and Alexander left the scene in Shores’ vehicle, taking Shores’ body with them before dumping it in Fairfield County, South Carolina, some 130 miles from the crime scene.
After authorities found the body, Lopez received further charges of first degree murder and concealing a death, with Alexander charged with accessory to those crimes.
Authorities have not described a motive for the murder, and the timeline for the suspects’ extradition is unknown.
