ASHTABULA COUNTY, Ohio (TCD) — Police recently arrested two women who allegedly found their elderly roommate dead inside their home, drove him to the bank, and withdrew money from his account.
According to a news release from the Ashtabula Police Department, on Monday, March 4, shortly after 5 p.m., officers responded to a call from the Ashtabula County Medical Center after 80-year-old Douglas Layman was brought there by his two roommates, Loreen Feralo and Karen Casbohm. They left shortly after and failed to provide any details.
However, a few hours later, one of the women contacted the medical center and shared some information about Layman, prompting police to respond to their home and interview them.
Investigators allege Feralo and Casbohm found Layman dead inside their home. With the help of a third person, Feralo and Casbohm reportedly propped Layman up in the front seat of his vehicle and drove to the bank, where they “withdrew an undisclosed amount of money from his account.”
Police said the women placed Layman in the vehicle in “such a manner that he would be visible to bank staff in order to make the withdrawal.”
After withdrawing the money, Feralo and Casbohn went to the medical center and left Layman’s body with staff.
The two women each face a charge of gross abuse of a corpse. According to WKYC-TV, they also face a charge of theft from a person in a protected class. Additional charges are under review and may be forthcoming.
WKYC reports that Casbohm appeared in court on March 5 for her arraignment, and her bond was set at $5,000. Feralo is scheduled to appear in court for her arraignment on March 14.
