3 High School Footballers Killed in Crash Caused by 2 Racing Sisters – Crime Online

One of two sisters charged in a fatal car crash earlier this month that killed three high school football players appeared in court Wednesday to face her charges.

Police say 21-year-old Dymond Monroe and 19-year-old Destini Genwright were racing on their way to their younger brother’s 18th birthday party on October 8 when Monroe’s Honda Civic ran off the road, killing three passengers, WTVD reports.

Court documents say Monroe was driving 76 mph in a 45 mph zone at the time of the crash, which happened shortly after football practice that day, and that she and her sister were racing in separate cars.

Genwright made her initial court appearance to hear the charges and will return to court in December. She has been charged with four misdemeanors: willful speed competition, speeding, careless and reckless driving, and an insurance violation, Fayetteville police said. Genwright is out of jail on a $10,000 bond.

Her sister, who was critically injured in the crash of her vehicle, remains hospitalized. She is charged with the same misdemeanors plus three felony counts of involuntary manslaughter.

The crash killed 18-year-old Jai-Hyon Elliot, 17-year-old Nicholas Williams and 17-year-old Trevor Merritt, who were passengers in Monroe’s car. All three were students and football players at E.E. Smith High School in Fayetteville.

“I hope that it is an ever-present reminder for the individuals when they’re driving — don’t do something that can result in you being hurt, a friend or a family member being injured, or, unfortunately, what we see when we lost three young lives two weeks ago,” Assistant Fayetteville Police Chief Todd Joyce told WTVD.
