CALLAHAN, Fla. (TCN) — Four people have been arrested and charged in connection with a 1-year-old’s methamphetamine exposure, police say.
The Nassau County Sheriff’s Office announced that 21-year-old Hayden Simmons, 21-year-old Damien Windham, 45-year-old Erica Foley, and 79-year-old Judith Addison were each charged with child neglect causing great bodily harm. Foley was also charged with possession of drug paraphernalia. All four were permanent residents of the home, but authorities did not release which of the adults charged are the child’s parents.
On Feb. 24, the Florida Department of Children and Families notified police that a toddler had ingested methamphetamine the day before. Authorities learned the 1-year-old, whose name has not been released, drank from a sippy cup that the parents later found had a bag containing methamphetamine at the bottom.
According to the sheriff’s office, none of the adults in the home called 911 when they discovered the child had ingested the drug. Once the child began vomiting, the mother took them to a fire station. The child was later transported to an area hospital to be treated for a potential overdose.
A search warrant revealed drug paraphernalia at the residence, including glass pipes with methamphetamine residue inside.
Sheriff Bill Leeper said, “This is a heartbreaking and completely preventable situation. A 1-year-old child was exposed to a dangerous, illegal drug because the adults in that home failed to provide even the most basic level of care and protection. There is absolutely no excuse for methamphetamine to be within reach of a child.”
According to Crime Online, Foley remains behind bars, while the others have bonded out. It in unknown whether the child was returned to the parents after they were released.
