A Michigan man who was a guest at a pool party where he allegedly stabbed four people, two of them fatally, has been charged with murder.

The Wayne County Prosecutor”s Office announced in a press release that Daiwan Lemane Hopson, 31, had been arrested and charged in connection with a violent stabbing incident on Aug. 9 that left two people dead. According to Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy, an altercation between Hopson and an unnamed 40-year-old man escalated in the backyard of the home of 31-year-old Jakirea Williams. As the altercation heated up, Hopson allegedly “produced a knife” and stabbed the 40-year-old man several times.

After the alleged fight moved to the home’s front yard, Williams reportedly tried to break it up. Hopson allegedly stabbed Williams, 25-year-old Martisha Payne, and another 31-year-old man. All four stabbing victims were taken to the hospital for treatment, but only two survived.

Worthy stated that Hopson fled the scene after his alleged stabbing attack. He was eventually arrested on Aug. 15. Local Fox affiliate WJBK reported that because Hopson was out on parole on a charge of assault with attempt to do great bodily harm, he was taken into custody by the Michigan Department of Corrections.

Prosecutors stated that Hopson will be arraigned in Detroit to face two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of assault with intent to murder.

In the press release, Worthy stated, “What started out as a friendly family and friends, end-of-the-summer gathering turned deadly with four people stabbed. Two succumbed to their injuries. A disagreement. A quick escalation. An introduction of a deadly weapon. And then multiple deaths. So senseless. So tragic. And so very violent.”

Hopson’s arraignment has not yet been scheduled.
