A 65-year-old man from Atlanta, Georgia, named Rickey Carter, has been found guilty of murdering his longtime friend, Quinlan Parker, over a debt of $35. The incident occurred on January 28, 2022, when Carter shot and killed Parker at an apartment in Decatur, Georgia.
The case was prosecuted by the DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office, with Carter being charged with Malice Murder, Felony Murder, Aggravated Assault, and Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony.
The investigation into the case began when the DeKalb County Police Department responded to a call about a person shot at an apartment on Maypop Lane. Upon arrival, officers found Parker dead from a single gunshot wound to the chest. Parker’s wife reported that shortly after her husband returned home from work, Carter knocked on their door. Carter was a longtime friend of Parker’s, and they let him in.
The argument that ensued was over money that Parker had borrowed from Carter a few weeks earlier. Parker’s stepdaughter, who was present during the argument, began recording it on her cellphone.
According to Parker’s wife, Carter pulled out a small black handgun and fired a gunshot. Carter later claimed that he shot Parker in self-defense, but the cellphone video contradicted this claim, showing Parker backing away from Carter before he opened fire.
Following the guilty verdicts, DeKalb County Superior Court Judge Tangela Barrie sentenced Carter to serve life plus five years in prison. The case was assigned to the Homicide and Gangs Unit and was prosecuted by Senior Assistant District Attorney Tauri Thomas, with assistance from Assistant District Attorney Emily Donkervoet, District Attorney Investigator Christopher Hollowood, and Supervising Victim Advocate Ikwo Nyong. DeKalb County Police Department Det. Monts led the initial investigation 1.
This tragic case highlights the serious consequences of disputes over money and the importance of resolving such issues peacefully. It underscores the gravity of the charges faced by Carter and the justice served by the court’s decision to sentence him to life plus five years in prison.
