A heavily redacted 911 call released by Charlotte County officials in Florida reveals the moments after a 23-year-old man allegedly stabbed his mother dead.
Connor Crumrine is accused of stabbing elementary school teacher Jennifer Crumrine at their home in Port Charlotte on Tuesday. First responders rushed her to an area hospital in critical condition with stab wounds on her neck.
She later died.
The 911 call captured the moments after the incident, with deputies forcing their way into the home, where they found the suspect on top of one of his sisters while holding a knife.
911 dispatcher: “I need you to help your mother.”
Crumrine’s sister: “I’m trying to help her…I have my hand on her neck and [inaudible]”
911 dispatcher: “Where is your brother now?”
Crumrine’s sister: “He’s on top of my sister with a knife.”
While responding deputies ordered Connor Crumrine to surrender, but he refused to drop the knife. The deputies subsequently used a Taser to detain him before taking him into custody.
As CrimeOnline previously reported, the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office said the family had planned to leave on a cruise on Tuesday, when Connor began making statements the night before.
The family said he made odd statements trying to teach his two sisters how to curl into a fetal position. According to an arrest affidavit, he told one sister to “sleep face down tonight so that he can take her to heaven and keep her from going to hell.”
“Last night, Connor began making statements to the family trying to teach them how to get into a fetal position and making statements about heaven and hell,” investigators said.
“During this time Connor would also make a finger gun gesture towards them. Due to a fear that Connor may cause harm to them during the night the rest of the family kept their bedroom doors locked.”
All three women locked their bedroom doors on Monday night before going to sleep. By Tuesday morning, Jennifer Crumrine decided to forgo the cruise and instead, get her son mental health assistance.
On Tuesday, one of the defendant’s sisters was on the phone when she heard her mother screaming, prompting her to call 911.
Crumrine was arrested and charged with three counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and one count of resisting a police officer with violence.
The sheriff’s office said Friday it was working with the State’s Attorney’s Office to upgrade the charges after Jennifer Crumrine’s death.
Jennifer Crumrine was a fourth-grade teacher at Sallie Jones Elementary School. The school told parents only that she had “passed away” and asked them to share the news with their children before school resumed after the holidays.
Support staff will be available for both students and staff.
