SACRAMENTO COUNTY, Calif. (TCN) —Â A mother and her former boyfriend will spend time behind bars in connection with the death of a young boy who suffered a fatal traumatic brain injury.
The Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office announced that on Aug. 12, a judge sentenced Jason Chitnis to 25 years to life in prison after a jury previously convicted him of first-degree murder and assault on a child under the age of 8 causing death.
Chitnis’ former girlfriend and mother of the victim, Dyamond Hudson, pleaded guilty in May of one count of child endangerment causing death and two counts of willful infliction of cruel and inhuman corporal punishment resulting in a traumatic condition. She received 12 years and eight months in state prison.
According to KCRA-TV, on Aug. 3, 2021, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office responded to Fair Oaks Boulevard to a report of an unresponsive 5-year-old child. The boy was reportedly transported to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries two days later. Medical staff determined he suffered abuse.
Upon further investigation, authorities learned that during the course of their relationship, Hudson would reportedly leave her son with Chitnis when she went to work. For weeks, Chitnis allegedly abused the child, “causing fractures to his ribs and pelvis, as well as perforating his large intestine, making it difficult for the child to eat.”
Prosecutors said Hudson knew about the abuse but continued to leave her son with her boyfriend anyway. According to the district attorney’s office, on Aug. 3, 2021, “Chitnis abused the child to the point of causing a traumatic brain injury that resulted in the child’s death.”
