A 31-year-old man in Texas has been arrested for allegedly killing his girlfriend’s ex-husband, fatally stabbing the 44-year-old victim outside of a birthday party over the weekend.

Jamarcus Dewayne Doggett was taken into custody and charged with one count of murder in the slaying of Wesley A. Agent, authorities announced.

According to a news release from the Lufkin Police Department, the fatal stabbing took place in the early morning hours on Saturday. Officers at about 2:30 a.m. responded to a 911 call regarding a disturbance in the area of the 900 block of Glenn Street. Upon arriving at the scene, police learned that an adult male victim, later identified as Agent, suffering from apparent stab wounds, had been transported to a local hospital by a personal vehicle.

The suspected assailant, identified as Doggett, had left the scene.

Officers responded to the hospital, where Agent succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at about 3:15 a.m., police said.

Police were able to locate Doggett at a nearby home, where he was questioned about the incident. Police said that no arrests were made at that time because detectives and officers were continuing their investigation. However, police on Monday said they had gathered enough evidence to arrest Doggett for Agent’s murder.

According to a probable cause affidavit obtained by Lufkin ABC affiliate KTRE, both men had been at a birthday party that evening when they began fighting in the street. One of Agent’s family members reportedly told police that after the fight, they took a knife from Doggett.

Shortly after the altercation, an officer responding to a separate 911 hang-up call found Doggett and his brother standing in the street. While talking to the men, the officer reportedly noticed blood on Doggett’s clothing and a cut on his hand and detained them at the scene. Doggett was transported to a local hospital due to excessive blood loss.

When speaking with police, Doggett said he knew Agent because he was dating Agent’s ex-wife, Nacogdoches CBS affiliate KYTX reported. He also claimed that Agent had “been following him around town throughout the day” and tried to fight him on two separate occasions that day, police wrote in a probable cause affidavit.

While at the party that evening, Doggett said that Agent pulled up and parked in the middle of the street, got out, and punched Doggett in the face.

“Jamarcus advised he then hit Agent back then grabbed a knife from his waist and swung it at Agent 2 or 3 times hitting him with it,” the affidavit reportedly states. “Jamarcus advised Agent went to the ground and Jamarcus stated he began punching him in the shoulder area and then pulled his shirt over his head before grabbing him and dragging him down the street. Jamarcus advised that was the last thing he remembers before blacking out.”

Doggett was processed at the Angelina County Jail where he is currently being held on $300,000 bond. It was not immediately clear when he was scheduled to appear in court.
