CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (TCN) — A 21-year-old woman and a teenager face charges in connection with the drowning death of a 3-year-old boy and suspected abuse of a 1-year-old child.
According to the Chattanooga Police Department, on the morning of Aug. 28, officers responded to a report of a 3-year-old drowning victim. Officers and fire personnel attempted to revive the victim before he was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.
At the hospital, authorities reportedly “observed clear signs of abuse on the deceased child and learned the surviving victim had also suffered multiple major injuries.”
According to police, a 17-year-old male admitted to allegedly abusing both kids. Janecia McKevie reportedly claimed she knew about the abuse but didn’t report it. Both suspects face two counts of aggravated assault and two counts of aggravated child abuse.
Police said the 17-year-old suspect remains held at the Hamilton County Juvenile Detention Center, and McKevie was booked into the Hamilton County Jail and Detention Center.
As of Aug. 29, the surviving child was in the hospital.
