3 Students in Critical Condition After Shooting at Colorado High School – Crime Online

Three students were critically wounded Wednesday afternoon in a shooting at a Colorado high school.

Jefferson County authorities said that the shooter is one of the wounded, KDVR reported.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said that all three Evergreen High School students were taken to a hospital, and CommonSpirit St. Anthony Hospital in Lakewood said they were in critical condition.

“We’ve received three victims, all minors from Evergreen High School. They are currently being actively treated at St. Anthony Hospital. We are a Level 1 Trauma Center and prepared for situations like this,” said Kevin Cullinan, president and CEO of the hospital, according to KCNC. “Each of the victims that we have sustained gunshot wounds. They are all, all three victims are all either in the Emergency Department or operating rooms at this time.”

Law enforcement said a fourth person was also transported to the hospital, but that person was not shot, KDVR said.

At a news conference after the shooting, sheriff’s office spokesperson Jacki Kelley said they department wasn’t sure if the shooting took place inside the school or outside and didn’t know what type of weapon was used other than “a handgun.” Police also said they do no believe any officers fired shots during the incident.

Kelley said calls about the shooting began coming in just before 12:24 p.m. and that officers from across the Denver metropolitan area responded to assist, KCNC reported. But the investigation has only just begun, she said.

“Honestly, I don’t even know if the suspect is old enough to drive,” Kelley said.

A mother said her freshman son told her he was near a door in the lunchroom when the shooting started and heard 15 to 30 gunshots.

“I know they’ve done drills at school in classrooms, but they were at lunch,” she said. “So that’s what, something that many students have said is that they just didn’t even know what to do, like a lockdown drill, with this happening at lunch.”

Another freshman, who identified himself as Sam, told KDVR he was in the bandroom when the shooting started. He said he “sort of blanked out” when he heard the first shots and a piece of debris hit his forehead.

“I saw him right in front of me and everything, he was right on the other side of the room and the door, and I saw the gun and everything pointed at me and everybody else … it was … I think he broke the window, and tried to get through, but don’t think he did,” Sam said.

The school district cancelled all school activities in the county for the remainder of Wednesday.

Kelley said that officers were sweeping the school for evidence and would be executing search warrants at the shooter’s home.
