An Army sergeant convicted of more than two dozen counts of rape, burglary, kidnapping, and attempted murder was found dead in his cell at the U.S. Disciplinary Barracks at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, last week.
Greville Clarke, 32, was sentenced to life in prison in April for multiple incidents which took place over 18 months between 2021 and 2022 at Fort Cavazos, which has since had its name changed to Fort Hood, honoring a Confederate general from the Civil War, Stars and Stripes reported.
Clarke was accused and convicted of breaking into the barracks rooms of five different women and robbing them, as CrimeOnline reported. He held two at gunpoint and strangled one with a lamp cord until he thought she was dead.
The Army did not provide a cause of death for Clarke but said his death was under investigation by the Army Criminal Investigation Division.
According to Stars and Stripes, Clarke did not attend his court-martial and was instead under constant surveillance at the Bell County Jail because of concerns he would try to harm himself.
