A father in the greater Dallas area is accused of beating his child to death against the infant”s crib, authorities in Texas have announced.

Jordan Greer, 22, has been charged with capital murder in his baby’s death, the Mesquite Police Department announced.

On Sept. 18, just after 5 p.m., police arrived at a home on the 5800 block of Northwest Drive in the city just east of Dallas. They had reportedly been told that a “small child was unconscious and not breathing.”

Responding officers said they found “an infant in medical distress,” and they “began life saving measures” with help from the Mesquite Fire Department. The child was brought to a nearby hospital, where the baby was further treated and observed.

“Multiple injuries were discovered on the infant,” police said. Those injuries included a skull fracture, brain swelling, brain bleeding, and multiple rib fractures that were in different stages of healing, according to a police affidavit obtained by Dallas-based TV station KDFW. The injuries are said to have been consistent with extreme physical abuse, and law enforcement launched an investigation into what happened.

Greer initially expressed confusion as to how his baby was hurt, the local outlet reported. However, when he was later interviewed by police about what happened, he allegedly confessed to violently shaking and hitting the child’s head against a crib on multiple occasions.

In addition to allegedly admitting he used excessive force on the child, Greer also expressed fear that he had killed him, KDFW noted.

A medical evaluation reportedly determined that the injuries were intentional and occurred over the course of at least two incidents of violence.

Five days after police initial arrived at the home, the child was pronounced dead. By Monday, investigators had apparently “developed sufficient evidence” to arrest and charge Greer with capital murder for his baby’s death, the police department announced. The investigation was ongoing, police noted.

The child was only seven weeks old, according to CBS’ Texas affiliates KTVT and KTXA.

Jail records show Greer was booked into the Dallas County Jail on Sept. 22 on no bond.
