Deputies in North Georgia conducting a welfare check Saturday night encountered an armed man outside the home and shot and killed him — then found a woman they believe was the man’s mother dead and decomposing inside.
Cherokee County Sheriff’s Capt. Jay Baker told WXIA that deputies were called to the Acworth home by friends of the woman who was found dead.
“When deputies arrived on the scene they were immediately met outside by an armed man, and a shooting occurred between our deputies and that individual, and he was killed,” Baker said.
Baker would not describe the circumstances that led to the shooting but said the Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting while the sheriff’s office is investigating the death of the woman.
He said after the shooting deputies noted the smell of decomposition coming from the home and found the body, which has been sent to the state crime lab for an autopsy.
Names of the shooter and his mother have not been released pending next of kin notifications.
A deputy was also hurt during the incident and was treated and released at a local hospital. Baker did not provide any detail on the deputy’s injuries.
