Missing grad student found shot, stabbed, and dismembered in his car

TOLEDO, OHIO (TCN) — A 27-year-old man who was reported missing on Nov. 22 was found dismembered in his car a few days later, according to police.

Malicai Calder was discovered deceased on Nov. 25 when Martel Huggins, 33, was pulled over while driving Calder’s work vehicle, WTVG reports. Police were investigating Calder’s disappearance at the time.

An affidavit obtained by WTVG said Calder had been shot and stabbed and some of his body parts were found in the vehicle. The Lucas County coroner confirmed in a news release that an autopsy was performed on the dismembered remains, but the cause, date, and time of death have yet to be determined. The manner of death was ruled a homicide.

Calder was reported missing by a friend and former co-worker Nov. 22, according to WTVG, and she had not seen or heard from him since Nov. 15. During a welfare check Nov. 21, the shower was heard running and the TV was on, but another police unit that went to the home later that day said the shower had been turned off.

Calder had previously experienced homelessness and had recently graduated with a master’s degree from the University of Toledo, People reports.

Huggins was charged with murder and felonious assault. Bond of $1 million was set by a judge during arraignment Nov. 25.
