SAVANNAH, Ga. (TCN) —Â A woman who was out for an evening walk in the park was attacked by an unknown man who poured acid on her head and body.
The victim, 46-year-old Ashley Wasielewski, was walking laps around the perimeter of a park when she saw a shadow of a person approaching her from behind, The Associated Press reports. When she turned to face him, he poured liquid on her, which she initially thought was water. When it began to burn her clothes off, she started to scream. A bystander then came to her aid.
Wasielewski’s son told the AP that his mother is currently being treated for second- and third-degree burns that cover more than half her body. Areas affected include her face, scalp, hands, and legs. The acid was reportedly so corrosive that it melted the key fob in Wasielewski’s pocket.
The AP reports detectives are working to determine what chemical was used in the attack. No arrests have been made, but police officers have been conducting additional patrols at area parks since the attack. WTOC reports police believe the attack was random.Â
The FBI announced they are seeking more information on the attacker.
