You’ll rarely see Dr. Contessa Metcalfe wearing her wedding ring. Why? Well, it’s simply impractical in her line of work. The Married to Medicine doctor explained this in a recent interview with The Daily Dish, as she and her husband, Dr. Scott Metcalfe, approached their 21st wedding anniversary.
“It’s interesting. As far as being a doctor, we have to wash our hands so much, and we wear gloves,” she began. “If you notice, most doctors don’t really wear our wedding rings… We wear our bands. So that’s what I’ve kind of morphed into after 20 years of marriage.”

Dr. Contessa said her everyday wedding band is actually an Oura Ring, which tracks health and wellness metrics, like heart rate, sleep quality, physical activity, and recovery. But make no mistake, the preventive medicine physician didn’t get rid of her actual wedding ring.

Dr. Contessa said she first laid eyes on the “beautiful” sparkler during her and hubby’s romantic getaway to the Caribbean, and she immediately fell in “love” with the piece.
“He apparently had went back to St. Thomas and got that ring for me,” she said. “It’s a beautiful princess cut [diamond] with baguettes on the side and two beautiful bands… I still have that ring.”

The Married to Medicine cast member said her husband had popped the question during their family’s holiday celebration, which wasn’t his initial plan.
“So interestingly enough, he had a big proposal planned,” Dr. Contessa recalled. “It was funny because my mom — and my mom is a blocker — she was like, ‘No, I wanna be there.’ So he ended up proposing, actually, at Christmas at my mom’s house in front of everybody, in front of the whole entire family because [my mom] was like, ‘I wanna see it.’”

Dr. Contessa, who shares three children with Dr. Scott, said the marriage proposal was “beautiful,” but she was intrigued by her husband’s original idea.
“When he told me what he was gonna do, I was like, ‘Mom, damn it!’” she joked. “But yeah, it happened at my mom’s house in front of the whole family.”

Dr. Contessa and Dr. Scott will celebrate more than two decades of love in May, which leads us to wonder: What’s their secret to a long-lasting marriage?
“I guess the first one is just don’t leave,” Dr. Contessa said with a laugh. “It took a while, but I don’t look for any happiness outside of myself.”
The Kansas City native said she used to “have all these expectations” that she would put on her husband; however, she has since learned that her happiness is her “responsibility.”
“He is who he is,” she said, referring to Dr. Scott. “He’s been the same way. He’s 55 years old. He’s not gonna change, so either I have to change my mindset, or I have to just realize that he’s gonna be the same person that I married, which is exactly who he is. I have more realistic expectations.”
