Mom charged after 12-year-old son with muscular dystrophy dies of starvation

FOND DU LAC, Wis. (TCN) — A mother has been charged with child neglect causing death after her 12-year-son died from starvation.Spectrum News 1 reports Tina Marie Beauprey, 51, was charged Feb. 2 in connection with the Dec. 5, 2025, death of her son, whose name has not been released. According to a criminal complaint obtained by the outlet, Beauprey’s son had Duchenne muscular dystrophy and was a wheelchair user. He was placed into foster care in May 2024 and was returned to his mother in November 2024, with the stipulation that he needed special care and would need to attend frequent appointments and evaluations for his condition. Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) workers grew concerned when the child appeared thinner at each appointment. His weight had decreased from 80 pounds in November 2024 to 56 pounds at the time of his death, according to Law & Crime. A criminal complaint obtained by WBAY states Beauprey was informed in July 2025 that her child needed an immediate evaluation and to call the hospital for weight checks. Beauprey said she called the hospital but alleges they never called her back.Officers conducted a welfare check on Dec. 2, Spectrum 1 News reports. The child had begun missing school, and Beauprey was not going into work. The boy reportedly told the officer he was feeling “a little crummy,” but Beauprey reportedly said she planned to send him to school the following day.On Dec. 5, Beauprey brought her son to the emergency room, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. WISN reports that an autopsy found the child died from starvation ketoacidosis and declared the manner of death as homicide. The autopsy said the findings were consistent with weeks or months of starvation. Seehafer News reports the child was prescribed heart medication to take daily, and an unopened package of it was found in Beauprey’s room. The criminal complaint obtained by WBAY said the child’s death was not caused by his disability and if he had had proper care, he would still be alive. Beauprey reportedly had adequate resources to care for her son, including receiving gift cards through DHS. The child reportedly was only fed a couple of bites of chicken nuggets and pizza during the last weeks of his life.Beauprey allegedly told detectives she knew her child was “already gone” when she loaded his wheelchair into the car to take him to the emergency room. She also allegedly said, “It’s pretty sad that, that it takes your kid dying just to get off of, to get them outta (sic) your hair,” according to the criminal complaint.Beauprey’s preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 17, according to Spectrum 1 News. If convicted, she could be fined up to $100,000 and spend up to 25 years in prison. Her cash bond was set at $500,000.MORE:
