An elderly Florida couple was found shot to death Tuesday in their condominium in Fort Pierce, and police say their 55-year-old son is a person of interest.
The son was later arrested in Indian River County, north of Fort Pierce, on charges of fleeing from police, WPBF said. He has not been charged with his parents’ deaths.
Fort Pierce Police Chief Dave Smith said that police found the couple, both in their 80s, when a woman called 911 to to request a welfare check when they missed an appointment.
According to WPEC, the caller was the victims’ daughter.
“She hadn’t heard from the parents and wanted a welfare check, and officers responded and located them deceased inside the apartment,” Smith told WPBF.
Smith said the son was seen leaving the scene prior to officers’ arrival. Indian River County deputies attempted a traffic stop there and he briefly fled.
“Early stages of the investigation, but we do believe that it is a suspicious death,” Smith told WPEC. “Again the adult son was seen leaving right before officers arrived on the scene so that’s why he’s a person of interest for us.”
Fort Pierce Police did not name the man or his victims, but a 55-year-old Philip Repaci was charged with fleeing a police officer on Tuesday in Indian River County, jail records show. He’s being held on a $150,000 bond.
“This is obviously a very tragic incident for both the family and the officers who had to respond to such a scene,” said Smith.
