A woman and a young boy are dead in suburban Minneapolis and a suspect has been taken into custody.
The Anoka County Sheriff’s Office released very little information, promising more later on. It said deputies and officers from several other agencies were called just before 1 a.m. Wednesday to the home in Lexington for a call about a shooting.
Once there, they found a woman dead and the boy “gravely injured.” He was taken to a hospital, where he was declared dead.
Officers deployed a police dog for a search of the area around the home and found a suspect. He was “apprehended by the K-9,” the sheriff’s office said, and taken to a hospital for treatment.
Along with the sheriff’s office, the Centennial Lakes Police Department and the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office are investigating.
No other information was released, but KSTP spoke to neighbors of the family. One told the station that the suspect was the dead woman’s boyfriend, and another showed reporters video of three children banging on his front door.
“Please help us,” the children shouted. “He shot my brother and mom.”
A spokesperson for the sheriff’s office, Tierney Peters, told the station the situation was “heartbreaking.”
“It’s hard to fathom, and then especially a young juvenile involved,” Peters said.
