Florida man arrested for driving backward down the highway

FLAGLER COUNTY, Fla. (TCN) — A man has been arrested after multiple drivers stopped him from driving backward down the highway.

On March 13, several drivers called the police after they saw a silver sedan driving in reverse in the eastbound lanes of the highway, according to Click2Orlando. Police tracked the vehicle to a Panda Express parking lot. Deputies stopped the driver, 47-year-old William Murphy III, when he switched the vehicle from reverse to drive.

According to Click2Orlando, Murphy said the car had a mechanical issue and that the best option was to drive it backward to AutoZone. The outlet reports that according to the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office, the car’s problems “evaporated when deputies got behind him…or was it in front of him?”

According to bodycam footage obtained by Click2Orlando, Murphy maintained he had done nothing wrong. He said, “I didn’t think it was that bad, you know what I’m saying? I wasn’t even swerving or anything like that or driving fast.”

Murphy was arrested and charged for driving with a suspended license; he has 10 past convictions for this same charge. He was later released on $1,000 bond, according to Click2Orlando.
