April Oliva is accused of stabbing the little girl about 40 times.
A grand jury in Florida has indicted a 40-year-old mother for the murder of her 6-year-old daughter last month.
The Santa Rosa County panel handed down the indictment against April Erin Oliva on Monday, WEAR reports.
CrimeOnline previously reported that Oliva was taken into custody on February 25 after she reportedly made a bizarre phone call her her sister, talking about “evil spirits” and suggesting that something terrible had happened.
Oliva’s sister contacted their father, who rushed to the house, where he found the front door unlocked and Oliva on the floor with her daughter, both covered in blood. She reportedly told her dad, “She’s dead.”
An autopsy later revealed that Valerie Oliva had about 40 stab wounds from two knives, while her mother suffered from self-inflicted stab wounds to the neck and stomach. She was booked into the Santa Rosa County jail after her release from the hospital.
“The physical evidence showed that the child had approximately forty stab wounds including stab wounds to her heart, kidneys, liver and spleen,” court documents say, according to the Pensacola News Journal. “The child’s throat had been cut and she had numerous cuts to her right hand and arm, consistent with defensive wounds.”
The child’s father was out of town on a business trip, and no one else was at the home at the time of the murder.
Oliva is being held without bond, WEAR said, and her next court date is April 30.
