An Oregon man was stabbed in the back on Sunday by a passenger in a vehicle that struck his pregnant wife in a parking lot in Rockaway Beach.
The woman was carrying her 2-year-old son when she was struck, and the driver did stop, the Tillamook County Sheriff’s Office said. The husband “confronted the driver” about the incident, and in the middle of the confrontation, a passenger got out, stabbed him in the back, and then got back in.
The driver fled the scene at that point but stopped a few blocks away and walked back to the scene, where she cooperated with the investigation.
Investigators soon learned that the passenger had fled on foot and even changed his clothes in an attempt to avoid detection. He was soon located, however, and arrested.
The sheriff’s office said the suspect is a 25-year-old man they charged with assault, menacing, unlawful use of a weapon, and disorderly conduct. KPTV identified him as natural born American citizen Isak Hunter Rutledge.
The station also said that the driver is not currently facing charges.
The sheriff’s office said that the woman and her toddler son were injured but were expected to be ok. The husband was taken to a hospital for treatment of his stab wound and is also expected to recover.
“This incident escalated quickly and had the potential to result in far more serious injuries,” said Sheriff Josh Brown. “I am proud of the swift response by our deputies and thankful for the assistance from the citizens who were present and helped provide information during the incident.”
