The Real Housewives of Rhode Island‘s Kelsey Swanson debunked “polygamy” rumors amid questions about her long-term relationship, before revealing that she was dating two men, however.
She set the record straight during Episode 2 of the new Bravo series, but Kelsey spilled even more details about her “very unorthodox” love life on The Real Housewives of Rhode Island After Show. For starters, she said that she believes in labels when it comes to fashion designers, not romance.
“There was somebody who was also occupying my time when my boyfriend was not around and when he was with somebody else,” Kelsey explained. “Why do you have to label it?”

After a few members of the RHORI cast broke down the difference between polygamy and polyamory, Kelsey noted that her romances would probably fall more into the latter category.
“I was in a relationship with a man, OK?” she elaborated. “This man ended up having — not at the same time, but later on — another person [who] was involved for the first five years. That was it. Was there other people involved, probably, after that? Yeah. But it wasn’t like, ‘OK, we’re in a polygamous relationship.'”
She continued, “It was just, I’m not gonna worry about what’s happening down there; she’s not gonna be worrying about what’s happening up here. It was like a one-off. Like, that’s not what I label my relationship, and it’s what I never labeled it.”

Though castmate Rosie DiMare described her as having “two boyfriends” on RHORI, Kelsey did not see her situation in the same light.
“Me and the guy who came about, that wasn’t like, OK, he’s my boyfriend, he’s my boyfriend, and we’re, like, polygamous together,” she added on the RHORI After Show. “I know it was entertaining for them to talk about, but it’s really not that exciting.”

Long story short, Kelsey unpacked how she and her boyfriend of 10 years simply “weren’t in a monogamous relationship for a period of time.” When a producer asked if she ever romanced anyone other than the one guy whom she had already mentioned, Kelsey admitted only to some flirty nights out, early on.
“At the very beginning of my relationship, I knew it wasn’t serious; like, we weren’t exclusive,” she said. “I would never sleep with men. Like, that was never my thing. I never grew up that way. And so, yeah, I would go out, I’d get drunk, I’d, like, make out with a dude. That was the extent of that. It was fun.”

During the RHORI series premiere, Kelsey also detailed how she met her boyfriend, whom she described as coming from “one of the most prominent families in the state of Rhode Island,” when she was 19 and “saw him on a boat.” They started dating ten years ago.
“For the first half of the year, my boyfriend is in Miami, and when he’s in Miami, he’s with somebody else,” the former Miss Rhode Island USA shared in a confessional. “But now, I’m at that crossroads where I just hit 30 and I want more for myself. I want to be in a committed relationship with one person. But at his age in his life, there’s not one thing he’s going to change. He is who he is, and either I accept it or I have to leave.”
During a group winery outing in Episode 2, Kelsey revealed that she was also dating somebody else, but insisted that she was not currently, nor had she ever been, “in a polygamous relationship.”
“Obviously, I want to have kids, I want to be married,” she told her castmates. “The person that I’ve been with for 10 years will not give me that. So, I am dating somebody else.”
A bit later, she added, “The two people in my life are the most wonderful people. Whether I end up with either/or, I would be very happy.”
