Just as K. Michelle’s country music career hit a high note on The Real Housewives of Atlanta, a major health scare stole the spotlight.
In the hours following her tribute performance to trailblazer Rissi Palmer at 2025’s Academy of Country Music Honors, K. Michelle landed in the hospital during Season 17, Episode 2. At the time, she described how she had gone from the red carpet and being on stage to having an infected “open wound” sideline her completely.
“I was preparing for the Academy of Country Music performance,” K. Michelle recalled in a confessional. “I’m sitting there minding my business, and I stand up. The whole coach is soakin’ wet. I didn’t feel anything. I was completely numb.”

Her team, meanwhile, quickly went to work “blow-drying [her] down” to help her get performance ready.
“It was very frantic,” the Season 17 newcomer added. “Just to get me on stage to sing. I didn’t know what was going on with my body or my health until I even got back to the room in Nashville.”
Why K. Michelle tearfully blamed the health scare on herself
During an on-camera consult with her doctor, K. Michelle learned that she would have to immediately undergo “reconstructive surgery.” When the physician left the exam room, she immediately broke down into tears while discussing the matter with her assistant, Ki’loni.
“I did not think I was going to be going to no hospital today,” K. Michelle tearfully told her. “I just hate I did this to myself. That’s the worst thing I ever did to myself.”

K. Michelle elaborated to a producer, “It’s because of something I did. I got my body done, trying to get a butt that I already had. I got illegal silicone injections, trying to overdo it and overextend it or expand it.”
As she continued to cry about the situation at the hospital, Ki’loni comforted her, saying, “You should give yourself a little bit of grace. We’ve all done things we wish we could’ve done differently.”

Earlier on RHOA‘s April 12 episode, K. Michelle opened up about being at a major career crossroads, following her previous success as an R&B artist.
As she explained to Porsha Williams and Kelli Ferrell over tea, she was “excited” to pay tribute to Rissi Palmer, whom she described as “a Black woman who’s been fighting for African Americans in country music forever.” She added that her own “first country single” ever was also about to start rolling out in the coming weeks.
“Honoring Rissi Palmer and having my first country music album coming out, while standing in a room full of the top executives in country music, is something that means more than anything,” K. Michelle added in a producer interview, ahead of her ACM performance.
Upon making her RHOA debut, K. Michele previously offered even more intel on her music career and pivot into a whole new genre. For starters, she underscored the fact that she already had four No. 1 albums, five gold records, and two platinum records.
“I’ve made a lot of songs that make people smile, laugh, cry, dance, everything,” she explained during the Season 17 premiere. “I’m a mood changer.”
She further told a producer, “When I started my music career, the record labels told me it was easier to do R&B than it was for me to do country. Every single R&B album I had, I said, ‘Is it time for my country album?’ And they would say, ‘This doesn’t sound Black enough.’ … It’s been years of a fight, but now, I get to put out the music that’s really in my heart.”
