When Shamea Morton Mwangi showed up to an appointment regarding her surrogacy journey on The Real Housewives of Atlanta Season 17, Episode 9, she brought along castmate Kelli Potter “for emotional support,” rather than her husband, Gerald Mwangi.
In a confessional, Shamea shared the reason for her visit. “I felt the need to have a meeting with my new surrogate because we’ve had over five failed transfers at this point,” she said. “But we still have one more male embryo, and I have to be sure, so that if it does not take, I know that it was all in God’s plan.”
When the agency’s founder, Shadina, who was also Shamea’s former surrogate, asked about Gerald’s whereabouts, the RHOA ‘Wife broke the fourth wall. “He didn’t want to be on these cameras,” she explained.

Having only one remaining male embryo was an issue, because, as Shamea filled in Kelli, she knows “how much [Gerald] wants a son,” despite their immense love for their two daughters, Shya, 7, and Shiloh, 3.
“If this last embryo doesn’t take, then… We might have to adopt,” a tearful Shamea told a producer. “Those are conversations we haven’t even had.” Overcome with emotion, she then announced to the crew that she was going to “need a minute” and walked out of the interview while dabbing her eye with a tissue.

Back in her meeting with Shadina, it was revealed that, after a “failed transfer,” Shamea had signed a contract with a new surrogate, and all that was left to do was to complete the next transfer and wait. “No pressure, but this is the last male embryo that I have,” Shamea emphasized, prompting Shadina to ask if she’d considered “purchasing eggs to create more embryos.”
After she admitted that she “hadn’t even thought about that,” Kelli chimed in to inquire if Shamea’s sister could donate one of her eggs. Shamea quickly nixed Kelli’s idea, however, declaring, “That’s weird. Oh my God, that would make me so uncomfortable. … There’s no way. That’s a lot for me.”

Where Shamea Morton Mwangi and Gerald Mwangi stand today
Despite their disagreements and his rare appearances on RHOA, Shamea revealed in a recent interview with BravoTV.com that her and Gerald’s marriage is still solid as they approach their ninth wedding anniversary in July 2026.
“He always shies away from the cameras,” she explained. “Even when it’s not Bravo cameras, he’s just like, ‘What am I supposed to say? What am I supposed to do? This is not me.’ But he really has always been supportive of whatever I want to do. It’s just not his thing. And I appreciate them respecting that.”
When it comes to the secret to their successful marriage, Shamea noted that open communication is key, especially when it comes to “the hard things” that might not be so “easy to talk about.”
She concluded, “We’re fighting to keep our love, to keep our happiness, to keep our home, the sanctity of our marriage. And it’s not always great. But when it’s great, it’s great. And when it’s not great, it’s still good. I always tell people marriage is like a happy job, the job that you really want. It requires work. You really have to clock in. But it’s the job that you enjoy.”
