HARRISONBURG, Va. (TCN) — A man known as the “shopping cart killer” has been sentenced to life in prison for the murders of two women in 2021.
WHSV reports that Anthony Eugene Robinson, 39, was found guilty in January 2025 of two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of aggravated murder, and two counts of concealing a body. He was sentenced on May 22 to two life terms for killing Tonita Smith, 39, and Beth Redmon, 54, in 2021.
Robinson was arrested in November 2021 after the bodies of Smith and Redmon were found in a vacant lot. They reportedly died from “trauma to the body” and though they were found near one another, they died at different times. Authorities learned during their investigation that Robinson used dating apps to meet women and bring them to a motel room. Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis said Robinson had a “remarkable absence of criminal history.”
At trial, jurors watched surveillance footage from the motel in which Robinson could be seen on separate occasions entering the room with one of the women and then leaving the following day pushing a shopping cart covered with a sheet, according to WTOP.
Robinson is also wanted in connection with the death of 40-year-old Sonya Champ in Washington, D.C., who was found near a metro station in a shopping cart, per WTOP. He is also suspected of being involved in the deaths of 48-year-old Stephanie Harrison and 29-year-old Cheyenne Brown in Fairfax County, Virginia. No charges have been filed against Robinson in connection with the deaths of Brown and Harrison.
WTOP reports Robinson’s defense will be appealing the ruling.
