PLACENTIA, Calif. (TCN) — A 41-year-old woman has been charged with one felony count of murder and one felony count of assault on a child in connection with the 2025 death of her 2-year-old son.

A press release from the office of Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer announced the charges against Melissa Lynn Beisel on June 9. If convicted, she will face 25 years to life in prison.

On Sept. 22, 2025, the father of 2-year-old Aidan called 911 when he discovered him dead in the shower with his mother, Beisel. When police arrived at the home, Beisel was still in the shower with her son with the water running and had superficial stab wounds on her neck and arms. She was taken to a hospital for treatment.

The investigation initially concluded Beisel was bathing her son in a walk-in shower using a plastic storage bin, the Placentia Police Department announced. She said she left the bathroom to get soap and the child was face-down in the bin when she returned. Beisel claimed she performed CPR and hurt herself with a sharp object when she failed. By the time Aidan’s father found them and dialed 911, they had been in the shower for about six hours.

The case was investigated as an accidental drowning, but when drowning was ruled out as Aidan’s cause of death, the manner was death was ruled to be homicide, according to the DA.

Beisel was arrested and charged with felony murder on June 4, according to the DA. She had previously been charged with involuntary manslaughter in September 2022 after she was released from the hospital based on interviews as well as evidence found at the scene, per police.

Spitzer said, “A mother is a child’s first protector. For a mother to use the very arms that are meant to shield her child from harm to instead physically extinguish the life of a child she created is a depravity which we will never be able to fully comprehend.”

NBC Los Angeles reports Beisel is scheduled to appear in court on June 30 for her arraignment and remains held without bail.
