Los Angeles, California – Phoebe Bridgers has returned with her first solo album in six years, and it reportedly contains some eyebrow-raising nods to her ex, Paul Mescal!
The 31-year-old will release Lost Weekend, her third studio album, on Friday, August 14. In the lead-up to its release, some reviews have given fans a peek at the record’s most memorable lyrics – including some clear references to her personal life.
According to The Guardian, Phoebe seemingly confirmed the rampant rumors that she and Paul Mescal had been engaged prior to their surprise split in late 2022.
“I’m supposed to be married but I called it off,” she sings in the album’s title track.

But that wasn’t all, as the review also highlighted a possible “swipe” at the 30-year-old actor’s current partner, singer Gracie Abrams.
“She can pretend to be me / Since she took my place in my bed, on that stage,” Phoebe sings on another track called The Governor’s Waltz.
Fans on social media were quick to point to pictures of Gracie performing with a stage set of a bedroom that strongly resembles one featured in several snaps shared by Phoebe over the years. (However, it’s worth noting that earlier photos of Gracie with a bed bearing very similar sheets had been unearthed as well.)
Prior to this, Phoebe and Paul had been very tight-lipped about what exactly went down.

In an interview in early 2023, Phoebe declined to comment explicitly on the relationship chatter, but she did confirm that she was not engaged at that point.
As for Paul, he admitted to Vanity Fair around the same time that he had a “temptation” to set the record straight, but said, “I don’t think that’s a wise thing to do.”
In a later interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the Oscar nominee was asked whether he’d like to comment on the split, and replied, “Maybe at some point. But just not now. It’s just difficult territory.”

Shortly after news of Paul and Phoebe’s breakup emerged, the Kyoto singer sparked romance rumors with comedian Bo Burnham. The two are seemingly still going strong to this day.
Paul, meanwhile, began dating Gracie in 2024, and the couple recently collaborated on the 26-year-old’s newest album, Daughter from Hell, with a co-written track called Imaginary Friend.
Fans can hear all of Phoebe’s confessions for themselves when Lost Weekend drops on August 14.
