A 21-year-old woman in Rhode Island is dead at the hands of her mother, according to authorities, who say they found a handwritten note and medication at the crime scene.

Anna Maria Angelosanto, 62, is being held without bail at the Gloria McDonald Women’s Facility in Cranston, Rhode Island, according to jail records reviewed by Law&Crime.

The defendant is charged with murder in the death of Alexandra Straccia, regional CBS affiliate WPRI reported.

On the morning of July 27, officers with the Cranston Police Department responded to a first-floor apartment on Kingwood Avenue in Cranston, Rhode Island. The city is a southern suburb of Providence.

Law enforcement arrived and allegedly found Angelosanto with apparent self-inflicted wounds, police said. Straccia was dead in a separate bedroom.

The defendant was brought to an area hospital to be treated.

Investigators searching through the home found a handwritten note, as well as prescription and over-the-counter medications, according to the TV station. Police said Straccia had been diagnosed with autism and depended on her mother for “around-the-clock care.”

Authorities believe Angelosanto killed her daughter and then tried to kill herself.

“This is an extraordinarily tragic case that has deeply affected our community and everyone involved in the investigation,” Cranston Police Chief Michael Winquist said in a statement, per WPRI. “We extend our deepest condolences to Alexandra’s family and loved ones as they continue to cope with this devastating loss.”

It is unclear exactly how the victim died.

Neighbors were left shocked by the news.

“It’s a tragedy,” Frank Oster, a multidecade resident of the neighborhood, told Providence NBC affiliate WJAR. “The mother will never be the same again in her life.”

Richard Jennings, another local resident, added: “I can’t believe that happened over there. You know, not with these people. … They were all very friendly people and took care of each other.”
