A Texas mother is behind bars for killing her toddler daughter under unknown circumstances, according to law enforcement in the Lone Star State.
Anum Khalil Khan, 35, stands accused of capital murder of a person under 10 years old, according to the Abilene Police Department.
The investigation began under particularly unusual circumstances when the child was brought to the police department’s front parking lot late in the morning on Aug. 11, authorities said.

An initial report identified the deceased child as 4 years old, according to Abilene-based CBS affiliate KTAB and NBC affiliate KRBC, which collectively pool their online coverage as Big Country Homepage.
At first, the TV stations reported the girl’s family brought her to the parking lot. Later the same TV stations identified the girl as 3½ years old and took note of the mother’s arrest later that day.
A family member went inside and asked officers for assistance; soon firefighters and paramedics also arrived on the scene, police said. Lifesaving measures were attempted, but the child was pronounced dead at the police station, according to law enforcement.
While authorities did not at first disclose the nature of the little girl’s trauma, police later said the child had “obvious injuries.”
Police then cleared the lobby of their own headquarters and turned the parking lot into the site of an active investigation.
The department obliquely referenced the incident on social media.
“If you are in need of an officer’s assistance, we ask that you wait in your vehicle and call to request that one responds to you,” a Wednesday post on Facebook announcing the reopening of the lobby reads. “If you have a non-emergency or records request, please avoid the area until further notice. We appreciate your cooperation.”
Law&Crime reached out to the Abilene Police Department for additional details on this story. No response was immediately forthcoming at the time of publication.
The investigation remains ongoing, police said.
