Jake Reiner says he’ll “never understand” his parents’ deaths as his brother Nick faces murder charges

Los Angeles, California – Jake Reiner has opened up about the life-changing moment he learned his parents, Rob and Michelle Reiner, were brutally murdered at home – allegedly at the hands of his younger brother, Nick.

In an interview with ABC7, Jake recalled the moment he received a call from his sister, Romy.

The 35-year-old had been attending a memorial service for a friend in Los Angeles when Romy reached out.

He didn’t answer at first, but when she called back right away, Jake “knew at that point something immediately was wrong.”

“Romy told me our dad was dead, and then she said, ‘I can’t find Mom.’ And I immediately went into shock,” he recalled.

“I need to get out of this train station, and I need to get to my parents’ house.”

Jake noted that, as a local reporter, he’s seen countless crime scenes over his career, but he was stunned to realize his own family had become the focus of one.

“It’s been eight months. It feels like eight years at the same time. And it also feels like eight minutes,” he said of the time that has passed since the tragedy. “Because every moment that I wake up, I’m reminded of my reality.”

“My parents had unconditional love for all three of us,” Jake said, referring to himself, his 28-year-old sister, and brother Nick, who has been charged in connection with their parents’ murders.

He also said Rob and Michele took a very dedicated approach to supporting Nick through his recovery from drug addiction.

On December 14, 2025, Jake lost more than half his family – including Nick.

“I mean, he’s in jail, so … I physically lost my parents. And then Nick was arrested. And now it’s me and Romy,” Jake explained.

In the months that followed, he wrestled with his grief and underwent therapy to process the loss.

“It manifests into rage, into how unfair this was. How I didn’t get a say in what happened,” Jake said. “I didn’t get to stop it from happening. I had no choice in the matter, and I just have to accept the reality of it. And to me that is just one of the most infuriating parts of all this.”

He doesn’t know what could have driven his brother to commit the terrible act.

“I’ll never understand. I don’t care how it’s explained to me. I don’t care what facts come out,” Jake said. “I will never understand why this happened.”

32‑year‑old Nick Reiner has been charged with two counts of first‑degree murder. He has pleaded not guilty.

Nick remains in custody in Los Angeles and is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing on September 15. He faces the death penalty or life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.
