A woman in Kentucky is accused of leaving her five children in such filthy conditions that the rancid odor emanating from inside “could be smelled from outside the residence.”
Desiree Pohlmann, 35, has been charged with second-degree criminal abuse of a child 12 or under, according to jail records reviewed by Law&Crime.
She has also been charged with five counts of endangering the welfare of a minor, Louisville ABC affiliate WHAS reported.

On Monday, officers with the Lyndon Police Department were called to a home on the 800 block of Granite Drive in Lyndon. The city is located about 12 miles from downtown Louisville.
A concerned neighbor had called 911 about children reportedly being left alone in a nearby house on Fossil Court.
As police approached the home in question, they said the smell of human and dog urine was “so pungent, it could be smelled from outside the residence.”
As officers entered the home, “they found some pretty deplorable conditions, including human and animal waste,” Lyndon Police Chief Robert Schroeder told local CBS affiliate WLKY.
Investigators then found five children, ranging from 7 months to 9 years old.
“Particularly notable was the fact that the children were sleeping on bedding material that [officers] felt had human and animal waste on it, and there was, in their words, ‘no food in the house at all,'” Schroeder added.
Officers were unable to find the prescribed medication for multiple children in the home, according to WHAS. The kids were fed and taken to the hospital for treatment.
Police also apparently discovered mold and a broken air-conditioning unit inside the home. Authorities called Kentucky’s Child Protective Services (CPS) and learned that Pohlmann, their mother, “had recently gained custody of the children back,” per the police chief.
The defendant had just returned from a day trip to Lexington, and she left her children with her 76-year-old mother, who CPS had already declared couldn’t adequately care for the children, according to court records. Pohlmann allegedly knew of community resources that she could utilize but was “unwilling to seek these resources or keep appointments.”
