PLYMOUTH, Mass. (TCN) — A 56-year-old retired nurse has been taken into custody and charged after allegedly attempting to film jurors as they exited the courthouse during Lindsay Clancy’s trial.
Clancy, 36, is standing trial for three counts of first-degree murder in connection with the January 2023 strangulation deaths of her children, ages 5, 3, and 8 months. Though Clancy has admitted to killing her children, she claims she was suffering from postpartum psychosis at the time and is not criminally responsible. The trial has garnered worldwide attention, and many of Clancy’s supporters gather outside the Plymouth County courthouse each day, according to Court TV.
Jurors have remained deadlocked after days of deliberating whether Clancy is criminally responsible for her children’s deaths. On Sept. 1, jurors were dismissed for the day at about 3:30 p.m. As they were leaving the courthouse, Court TV reports Dawn Light was allegedly sitting in the parking lot attempting to film jurors as they left, which is illegal in every state. When police approached her, she allegedly said that she was “waiting to see if Lindsay Clancy would come out of the building.”
According to a police report obtained by CBS News, “Light claimed she was not aware that she had filmed the jurors. She also stated, ‘I really didn’t see a sign that said employees only. It wouldn’t have stopped me.’”
When police looked through deleted files on Light’s phone, they allegedly found four photos of jurors in the trial, Court TV reports. Light was taken into custody at about 3:40 p.m. and charged with one count of aggravated intimidation of a witness, jurors, or person furnishing information in connection with criminal proceedings.
On Sept. 2, she pleaded not guilty to the charges at her arraignment and was released without cash bail. She was ordered to stay away from the courthouse and all jurors and trial witnesses, per Court TV.
The day after Light’s arrest, Judge William Sullivan individually questioned each juror before ordering the jury to return to deliberations, according to CBS News. Sullivan reportedly found no issues.
CBS News reports Light does not have a criminal record and is a retired nurse living on a fixed income. If convicted, Light could face more than 21 years in prison, according to Court TV.
