A jury in Tennessee did not take long to find a woman guilty after authorities said she used scalding water to burn her 6-year-old son’s head and hand and also left him outside in the cold as a punishment.

Jasmine Irby, 31, has been found guilty as charged of aggravated child abuse and aggravated child neglect, the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office announced on Tuesday. The jury deliberated for just about an hour.

The case stemmed from abusive methods Irby used to punish her then-6-year-old son in late 2023, prosecutors said, per local NBC affiliate WMC.

The DA’s office did not immediately respond to Law&Crime’s request for additional details.

According to authorities, Irby “used hot water as punishment” on her son, giving him second-degree burns to his hand and head. “Evidence showed the child was also made to stand outside in the cold wearing only pajamas,” the DA’s office added.

Irby lived at a residence in Memphis, the local outlet reported.

Jail and court records show Irby was booked in the Shelby County Jail on May 17, 2024, and held on a $300,000 bond. She was indicted by a grand jury on Sept. 24, 2024.

During the trial, which began last week, Irby reportedly testified that she “only” burned the child’s hand — a claim prosecutors said was contradicted by evidence of injuries to both his hand and head. She showed no apparent remorse about her actions.

The DA’s office said prosecutors used recorded jail calls to prove Irby’s guilt.

The defendant is scheduled to be sentenced on Oct. 29.
