Los Angeles, California – Madonna is back! Later this month, the pop icon will return to the MTV Video Music Awards stage after more than two decades.
“I’ve got a confession, too: @madonna will perform at the 2026 #VMAs,” MTV announced on its Instagram page on Wednesday.
Her last appearance at the event was 23 years ago, as Rolling Stone reported. Just like back then, Madonna will open the show.
In 2003, the Vogue singer stunned the world with a legendary opening that saw her share a kiss with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera.

But her history goes even farther back: Madonna took the stage during the first-ever VMAs in 1984.
It’s expected that Madonna will bring several songs from her new album Confessions II to the stage. The record is a follow-up to her 2005 hit, Confessions on a Dance Floor.
The 68-year-old has earned 11 VMA nominations with her newest album, including Video of the Year and Best Dance, at this year’s ceremony.
Madonna’s opening performance is just the latest in a string of high-profile shows, including a pop-up performance in the heart of Times Square in June and an appearance at the star-studded halftime show for July’s FIFA World Cup final.
