A Virginia man will spend the better part of three decades behind bars for killing his stepbrother over a rent dispute in Tennessee.
On Friday, Perry Lamont Schoolfield, Jr., 33, pleaded guilty to one count of murder in the second degree over the April 2025 stabbing death of 30-year-old Isaiah R. Bowden.
In quick fashion, the defendant was sentenced by 3rd Judicial District Judge John F. Dugger Jr. to 25 years in prison, the maximum sentence allowed under Volunteer State law. The court also credited Schoolfield with 160 days spent in pretrial detention.

The brotherly violence occurred on a Thursday night in April 2025 at a residence on North Sunset Street in Greeneville, a medium-sized town located roughly 30 miles west-southwest of Johnson City.
Officers responded to the residence and found Bowden suffering from a stab wound to his upper body, according to an affidavit obtained by The Greeneville Sun and local radio station WGRV.
Police allege the defendant waited for his stepbrother to leave the house before confronting him as he approached his vehicle.
“I am here to kill you,” Schoolfield told his victim, witnesses said.
Paramedics rushed the victim to Greeneville Community Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries later that same day.
The man lovingly known as “Zeek” to friends and family was remembered fondly in his obituary.
“From a young age, Isaiah was adventurous, traveling to various cities and states, soaking in the experiences that shaped him,” the eulogy reads. “A true creative at heart, Zeek saw himself as a superstar, pouring his energy into his music and videos, which can be found on YouTube—a testament to his artistry and vision. Above all, Isaiah cherished his family. He took immense pride in being a father, ensuring that his son, Rian, was always cared for and loved. He was a protector, a dreamer, and a man who lived life on his own terms.”
Somewhere along the way, discord brewed over rent money for the residence Bowden shared with Schoolfield in Blountville.
The victim, however, was visiting his girlfriend in Greeneville on the night in question when the defendant came to gripe.
Those complaints turned into a scuffle outside and resulted in the defendant delivering a fatal stab wound to the victim’s chest.
During the sentencing hearing, both the prosecution and the defense expressed the belief that the incident was something of an oddity and that Schoolfield was genuinely remorseful about what happened.
“This was a tragic case involving two brothers, and there are no words that can adequately express the loss and pain involved for all family members,” defense attorney Hunter Shelton told WGRV.
Judge Dugger tended to agree with the attorneys and described the situation as sad, according to the radio station. The court encouraged the defendant to “stay out of trouble and do what he could while behind bars to work on his education.”
The proceedings drew to a close with the judge allowing the defendant’s father to exchange a few words with his son — while the two were separated by court security and roughly eight feet apart.
