DUBLIN, Calif. (TCN) — An elderly couple has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of their son-in-law, who was allegedly in a custody battle with their daughter.
On Sept. 26, 40-year-old Jonathan McKinsey, who worked as the head of engineering for New York Times Games, was fatally shot at a park, allegedly by his in-laws, both 77 years old, according to KGO-TV. According to a witness, the couple allegedly fled after the shooting and were apprehended at an intersection near the park.
The suspects, identified by the authorities as a married couple, Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, according to KRCA, were arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit a crime. McKinsey was pronounced dead at the scene and Zhang and Chen were booked into the Santa Rita Jail in Dublin, California.
According to court documents obtained by KGO-TV, McKinsey and the suspects’ daughter, identified as Candice Jang by KCRA, were in the midst of a contentious divorce and custody battle. In the documents, both McKinsey and Jang accuse each other of domestic violence.
According to court records, McKinsey was charged with two counts of misdemeanor child abuse after allegedly hitting his 6-year-old son in the face and leaving his 2-year-old alone at home for over an hour without supervision, KGO-TV reports. He had pleaded not guilty to those charges and was scheduled to appear in court the week of Sept. 28.
Jang had applied for and was granted a protective order against McKinsey in October 2025, according to KCRA. In the request, Jang alleged McKinsey had abused her and the children, as well as her mother, and detailed incidents ranging from 2020 to 2025.
In her request, she alleged, “The abuse that happened over the past 17 years has caused permanent damage to my mental health and physical health. … I would like a restraining order to protect myself and my three children, as well as my mother from future abuse.”
McKinsey alleged Jang abused him during their relationship, per KCRA, and also alleged Chen used anti-LBGTQ+ language against him and one of their children. McKinsey, who was transgender, also alleged that Jang tried to pull medical tubes out of his body after undergoing a transition-related procedure.
KCRA reports Zhang and Chen are scheduled to be arraigned on Sept. 30.
