ATACOSCA COUNTY, Texas (TCN) — A 47-year-old man has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of his girlfriend, whose remains were disposed of in a burn pit.
According to a press release from Audrey Gossett Louis, 81st Judicial district attorney, 37-year-old Tiffany Garza was last seen on March 25, 2019, and was reported missing soon after that.
In a sheriff’s office press release from March 2023, authorities noted they obtained an audio recording in July 2019 from a witness who said Garza had been killed at an address where deputies had responded in the past. According to Gossett Louis, this witness said he was present when Garza was killed and helped Jeffrey Lee Devorah burn her remains.
Multiple agencies conducted a three-day search of the property, according to the sheriff’s office. Blood evidence, determined to belong to both Garza and the suspect, was found. In addition, a burn pit was discovered and multiple bone fragments were found inside. DNA analysis connected the blood and bone evidence to Garza.
The suspect was initially interviewed in 2019 following an unrelated arrest, but he claimed he knew nothing about Garza’s disappearance and death. The case was reassigned in 2023, and Devorah was arrested on a murder warrant in March 2023, according to the sheriff’s office.
Devorah was found guilty of murder on Aug. 13 and sentenced to life in prison on Sept. 29 in connection with Garza’s death, according to the DA. Gossett Louis said, “No sentence can restore what her family has lost, but Tiffany’s life — and the truth about what happened to her — deserved every bit of that effort. Tiffany’s life mattered. Our thoughts remain with her family and everyone who loved her.”
