NEW YORK (TCN) — A 31-year-old man is facing charges of murder, attempted murder, and assault after police allege he pushed his ex-girlfriend and baby daughter off a balcony.
CBS New reports that on Oct. 6 at approximately 3:40 a.m., police were called after a woman and her baby were found on the ground outside a building. Responding officers found 23-year-old Nathaly Ramirez and her 8-month-old daughter, whom the New York Post identified as Angel Novalty Carrasco-Ramirez, suffering from injuries consistent with a fall.
Ramirez was pronounced dead at the hospital, according to the Post. Her baby is in stable condition, per CBS News.
Investigators learned Ramirez and the child were allegedly pushed off a 15th-story balcony after witnesses reported hearing screams coming from the apartment, according to CBS News. WTOC reports officials believe Ramirez tightly embraced her baby as she fell, cushioning the impact.
Angel Carrasco, Ramirez’s ex-boyfriend and the father of the baby, allegedly fled the scene and was apprehended at a friend’s home on Oct. 7, per CBS News. He is facing charges of murder, attempted murder, and assault.
U.S. Marshal Ricky J. Patel said, “This horrific tragedy weighs heavily on every team member who worked this case. … We owed it to the brave mother who gave her life to save her child from a vicious individual. While nothing can undo this terrible loss, taking this suspect off the street ensures he will answer for his alleged heinous actions.”
The New York Post reports Carrasco has been arrested for domestic violence-related offenses in the past. On Jan. 5, he allegedly slapped Ramirez and was charged with burglary three days later after he allegedly broke into her apartment to wait for her. The Post reports Ramirez was also accused of threatening another ex-girlfriend via text in the past.
Ramirez’s friend, Dominique Rosado, told the New York Post, “In the last moment of her life, she was protecting her daughter. … That’s what it means to be a mother. She was a good mother.”
