MONTEREY COUNTY, Calif. (TCN) —Â New details have emerged in the case of Baby Angelita, a newborn found deceased amid an alleged incest investigation involving a 14-year-old girl and her father.Â
On Aug. 1, a deceased baby girl was found on the side of the road. She was nicknamed Baby Angelita and an investigation surrounding the circumstances of her death began.Â
On Sept. 6, an Amber Alert was issued for Diana Galvez Ortega and her father, 38-year-old Sergio Galvez Perez. Authorities believed Galvez Perez was the father of his daughter’s baby and he was hiding her to avoid arrest. The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office found probable cause to arrest Galvez Perez on charges of incest, lewd and lascivious acts with a child under 14, lewd acts with a minor, unlawful sexual intercourse, child concealment, and child endangerment.
Galvez Ortega was found safe in Mexico on Oct. 5, and her father was arrested. Galvez Ortega’s mother, 36-year-old Ofelia Garcia Ortega, was arrested the following day.Â
Garcia Ortega was charged with misdemeanor displaying or possessing a forged identification card; permitting a child to suffer or be endangered; and misdemeanor contributing to the delinquency of a minor, per the sheriff’s office. According to investigators, Garcia Ortega falsified documentation that allowed her daughter to work in the agricultural fields and drive a car starting at 14, and she deliberately kept her out of school.Â
On Oct. 8, the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office held a press conference detailing additional findings in the case.Â
Investigators said forensic evidence showed Galvez Ortega allegedly gave birth on the road and then drove over the newborn, SFGate reports. Sheriff’s office officials said the infant had suffered from crushing injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene when she was discovered Aug. 1.
According to witnesses, Galvez Ortega allegedly drove herself and her mother to work that day and her father was not in the area at the time, per SFGate. After she gave birth, Galvez Ortega allegedly texted her father to tell him she had had the baby and hidden it because she was afraid of how her mother would react. Investigators say there is no evidence that Galvez Perez was involved in Baby Angelita’s death.
Evidence recovered from the teen’s phone allegedly showed searches over the past several regarding pregnancy termination and concealment, as well as how to turn off the location on an iPhone.
SFGate reports the family home was searched on Aug. 3. Galvez Ortega was reportedly hiding in the closet under a pile of clothes and told detectives that the father of her baby was an unknown boy and that she did not get any medical care after she gave birth. She was taken to a hospital, but her father allegedly took her out against medical advice. Both then went missing.
DNA evidence allegedly proved Galvez Perez was the father of both Galvez Ortega and Baby Angelita, according to SFGate.
Galvez Ortega is in the custody of Mexican child protective services and authorities in the U.S. are seeking the extradition of Galvez Perez, according to SFGate. No homicide charges have been filed against anyone in connection with Baby Angelita’s death.
