MACHIAS, Maine (TCN) —Â A 67-year-old man has been found guilty of murder in connection with the 1984 death of an 18-year-old.
According to the Maine State Police, Linda Maxwell spent the evening with friends on Aug. 23, 1984. It was the last time she was seen alive. Her body was found along the shoreline of a river two days later, and despite a lengthy investigation at the time, the case was never solved.
More than 40 years later, an arrest was made in connection with Maxwell’s death. Following an expanded investigation, a Washington County, Maine, grand jury returned an indictment charging Raymond Brown with murder on May 1, 2025. He was taken into custody after a traffic stop.
Earlier this year, Brown confessed to his cellmate that he had killed Maxwell by suffocation, the Bangor Daily News reports. He had been among the group of friends out with Maxwell on the evening she was last seen. He reportedly flirted with Maxwell and told other people that he wanted to have sex with her; he was married at the time. He offered to give her a ride home and later told people he had dropped her off outside a store.
Brown’s criminal history includes five convictions preceding Maxwell’s death, and two charges for sexual misconduct in the years after, according to the Bangor Daily News.Â
He was found guilty of murder on Oct. 8, according to the Bangor Daily News. When sentenced at a later date, he faces 25 years to life in prison.
