Mississippi home invasion suspect allegedly killed 81-year-old man before shooting himself in bathroom

UNION COUNTY, Miss. (TCN) — A burglary suspect who allegedly broke into a home and killed an 81-year-old resident then turned the gun on himself, according to authorities.

WTVA reports that on Oct. 15, Eric Basco allegedly entered the home owned by Bobby McGill and his wife at about 4 a.m. The couple was asleep in bed, and McGill’s wife escaped to call 911 while McGill reportedly tried to fight off Basco. During the altercation, Basco allegedly gained access to McGill’s gun and fatally shot him.

According to WTVA, Basco then allegedly went into the home’s bathroom and shot himself. He was transported to a hospital for treatment. Magnolia State Live reports he died from the self-inflicted gunshot wound a few days later. Investigators believe Basco’s primary motive in allegedly entering the residence was to burglarize it.

According to his obituary, McGill was a retired truck driver and the father of five children. He had been married for 42 years and had five children and multiple grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
