On Aug. 25 at about 8 a.m., Dannady was waiting for a Jefferson County Public Schools bus in the area of Beech Street and Wyandotte Avenue in Louisville, Kentucky. She was a student at Valley High School.

Dannady’s family members told the TV stations that she was having an ongoing problem with another girl. According to a witness cited by police, a vehicle approached Dannady as she stood at the bus stop.

The suspects reportedly got out of the vehicle looking for a fight, but Dannady said she would not fight the girl. The boy then allegedly loaded a handgun and said, “You’re going to fight them or I’m going to shoot you.”

Police said Dannady tried to run away, but Hassell allegedly fired several shots and hit her in the head. Dannady was brought to a hospital, but she was pronounced dead several days later.

Surveillance cameras allegedly captured the suspects’ vehicle driving north toward Indiana, and the Jeffersonville Police Department in Indiana helped locate the vehicle.

Thompson, who was 17 at the time of the shooting but has since turned 18, was arrested, per local CBS affiliate WLKY. Hassell, who was 16 at the time of the shooting, later turned himself in.

Police said they would push for the two suspects to be charged as adults.

An obituary for Dannady says she was “a beloved daughter, sister, granddaughter, relative, student, friend, and cherished young lady whose presence brought love and meaning to the lives of those who knew her.” It added: “She was deeply loved by her family, and the precious memories they shared with Dannady will forever remain close to their hearts.”
