NEW YORK (TCN) — A former West Point candidate drugged his pregnant girlfriend to force an unwanted abortion before going on to graduate school to study public health.
According to The Associated Press, Caleb Suh assaulted a 19-year-old fellow cadet at West Point in March 2022. The victim was reportedly pregnant and wanted to have the baby, but Suh did not. He used the victim’s name to open an account with an online pharmacy to order medications to cause an abortion, and obtained Xanax from a friend to use as a sedative. He reportedly spiked the victim’s prenatal protein shake with the Xanax and administered the abortion medication once she was sedated. The victim woke up bleeding and dialed 911.
According to a criminal complaint obtained by People, Suh then impersonated the victim on the online pharmacy’s site, asking if “I would feel the pills in my vagina. Once the victim was hospitalized, Suh asked the forum on the online pharmacy, “They moved me to another hospital, and I think they are going to do a procedure to get rid of the remains in my uterus. Will they say anything if they see the remaining pills in there? Will I have to tell them that it was self-induced?”
People reports the couple broke up soon after the victim’s pregnancy ended, and she reported the incident to West Point’s Army Criminal Investigation Division. According to the outlet, the outcome of that investigation is not known. Military.com reports Suh told investigators the miscarriage was accidental and he denied having ordered the pills.
NBC News reports Suh pleaded guilty in federal court in June to assault resulting in substantial bodily injury to a dating partner.
On Oct. 28, the victim filed a suit in the state of New York seeking unspecified damages. In the victim’s lawsuit, she alleges Suh ignored her pleas for help on the night of the incident and left her alone and incapacitated. Her lawyer told the AP, “She’s suffered a life-changing event that she is still dealing with and will be dealing with for the rest of her life.”
The AP reports Suh graduated from Cornell University in the time between the assault and the suit being filed and went on to graduate school at Columbia University to study public health. According to the outlet, he is awaiting sentencing.
The New York Post reports Suh requested sentencing to be delayed so he could finish his semester at Columbia University and the request was granted. Prosecutors are seeking a sentence of two years in prison for Suh.
