What To Know
- In Free-From Week, the six remaining bakers made gluten-free, dairy-free or vegan treats.
- One contestant earned the Star Baker title for their impressive dinosaur cake.
- Another baker was eliminated after struggling in all three challenges.
It’s getting down to the wire on The Great British Baking Show as another contestant has been eliminated from the tent after making a huge error, leaving just five bakers in the competition.
In the latest episode, hosts Alison Hammond and Noel Fielding announced that the six remaining contestants would face “free-from” week, meaning bakes that were gluten-free, dairy-free, or vegan. For the Signature challenge, the bakers had to create gluten-free pastries for a children’s party, with either a sweet or savory filling.
For the Technical challenge, judges Paul Hollywood and Nigella Lawson tasked the contestants with making a vegan chocolate sponge cake and ganache with frosting. The trick was that each had to be designed with a different color and made to look like a different animal.
Meanwhile, for the Showstopper challenge, the bakers had to make a children’s birthday cake that is either gluten-free, dairy-free, or vegan, and had to include a moving part or interactive element.

The episode started well with several contestants cooking up some incredible pastries for the Signature. Law student Mo even earned a coveted Hollywood handshake for his gluten-free Pop-Tarts. Elsewhere, artist and drag king Gabe impressed with his ladybug-shaped pastries filled with hamburger ingredients.
Things didn’t go so well for retired garment technologist Gary, who created his own take on the popular children’s birthday cake ‘Colin the Caterpillar’ with his own ‘Gazza the Caterpillar.’ Unfortunately, both Hollywood and Lawson didn’t like his pastry.

Gary continued to struggle in the Technical challenge, making a huge error in forgetting to add the vegan butter to his icing. His axolotl cake ended up melting into a pink gooey mess. Meanwhile, Gabe impressed again with his delicious dinosaur cake.
Gabe’s day only got better in the Showstopper, where he created a bug-inspired chocolate cake, complete with “dirt” when you could dig for edible “worms.” In fact, Hollywood said it was so good he could sell them. This earned Gabe the Star Baker title for the episode.

Unfortunately, Gary couldn’t turn things around with his witch’s cauldron creation. The judges criticized the cake for being Halloween-y on the outside but summery inside with its strawberry flavor. Also, Gary’s buttercream came out too gritty.
In the end, Gary became the latest contestant eliminated. “It’s all right, don’t worry, no worries. I am really, really proud, yeah, I just didn’t expect to get this far,” he said. ‘My main aim was to get to week three, and now it’s my turn to go.”
He added, “This is probably one of the best experiences I have ever had in my life. Yes, it has… it’s been brilliant.”
