Who Was Chuck Hughes Hughes?
Chuck Hughes was born on March 2, 1943, in Robeline, Louisiana. After graduating from high school in 1961, he attended the Northwestern State University of Louisiana in Natchitoches on an academic scholarship. At Northwestern State he played both football and basketball. He graduated with a degree in industrial arts in 1965.
In 1967 Hughes was drafted by the Los Angeles Rams as a wide receiver. He played for the Rams until 1968 when he joined the Detroit Lions after being traded for running back Mel Farr. He continued to play for the Lions until his untimely death four years later at Tiger Stadium in Detroit, Michigan.

On October 24th 1971, while playing against the Chicago Bears at Tiger Stadium in Detroit, Michigan, Chuck Hughes tragically passed away. What caused this amazing athlete’s death was a coronary thrombosis which resulted in a massive myocardial infarction leading to the cutting off of blood flow to his heart. A great loss for the Detroit Lions, fans and teammates alike. To honour him and show their respect for him, all 40 of his Lions teammates attended his funeral in San Antonio, Texas along with his head coach Joe Schmidt.
